Most portable recorders are equipped with a rather noisy microphone pre-amp that won't give you that real clear sound your digital recorder is capable of.
The line input, which is available on every portable recorder, is able to handle a much higher signal level than the microphone inputs.
This will avoid brick-walling which will happen when the signal fed into a microphone input is so high that it causes distortion regardless of the level settings.
